During this time of year many of our schools participate in a week of giving, where each day is devoted to a different cause. At Elizabeth Ziegler Public School, this week is organized by the Union of Youth student group.

On Make ‘em Smile Monday, small items such as books and games were brought in for the I Love First Peoples shoebox gifts program. Elizabeth Ziegler PS filled 30 shoeboxes filled with fun, educational items to Indigenous students in Attawapiskat, as a gesture of friendship and reconciliation.

On Toonie Tuesday over $650 was collected to purchase gift cards for Monica Place, a local support site for young mothers. Warm Wednesday, collected cold-weather accessories for distribution through The Working Centre. Tidy Thursday, encouraged donations of cleaning and hygiene products for Reception House, an organization that helps to welcome government assisted refugees to Waterloo Region. The week of giving wraps up today with Food Friday, where non-perishable food items are being collected for The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

In addition to the week of giving, the Grade 5 and 6 enrichment class organized a student art auction raising funds for another local organization, Lutherwood’s Safe Haven Youth Shelter.

“The children wanted to support a local organization that helped youth. Specifically, around the winter season, they were thinking a group that provided shelter from the cold would be best.” said their teacher, Lesley Hill.

This first-time event took place at last night’s holiday open house, and was met with many enthusiastic bids, raising $900 in support of this important charity.

Thank you Elizabeth Ziegler students and staff for showing us how we can give back and make a difference in our community everyday.

We are counting down 12 days of giving where we feature some of the wonderful acts of kindness our staff and students are modelling during the holiday season.
